Water Safety Educational Lessons

The leading accidental cause of death in the state of Arizona for children under the age of 5 is drowning. That is why I feel it is important to go out in the community and teach water safety. I visit local Kindergarten classrooms and preschools before summer. I love sitting with the kids for a story, we usually read "Stewie the Duck, Learns to Swim" we sing, and we talk about why rules are important near the water. The kids are given a color activity with water safety information on the reverse side. Teaching Water Safety Lessons can save a life, because one drowning is ONE too many.

10 Facts you need to know about Water Safety

1. Drowning is the first leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of five in Arizona.
2. 50% of drownings occur in residential pools rather then open water, like lakes.
3. A locked gate should not be used as a substitute for a pool fence. 65% of the children died in their own pools at home. 72% had direct access to the open pool once they were outside the house.
4. Swimming lessons are important for pool safety, babies as young as six months can be taught to float, and all children over a year can learn to swim. However NO child is "drownproof".
5. Constant supervision is essential, a child can drown within seconds.
6. Four-sided pool fencing, at least 5 feet high, demonstrated a 50% drowning reduction.
7. 35% of drownings are not at the home of the victim but rather at the home of a friend or relative.
8. Immediate CPR can prevent death or massive brain damage. All parents as well as pool owners should become certified.
9. A common misconception is that you will hear the child yell for help. Children often fall into a pool and silently slip under the water. Drownings can occur without anyone hearing a sound.
10. Children who can only swim with "floaties" can not swim.
